How To Manage Your Hair When You’re On Vacation8 min read

After months of dealing with the stresses of daily life, girl you deserve a break! A long and relaxing vacation is a perfect way to recharge and feel rejuvenated. However, travelling with afro-textured hair isn’t always a walk in the park, especially when you have various bottles of hair products and creams to carry. A proper, relaxing vacation for all you curl queens include freedom from a stressful haircare regimen. So we have some easy, time-saving tips to protect and manage your ‘fro while you are away from home.

1. Steer Clear of Harsh Sun Rays

Just like your skin, your locs require protection from the sun. Too much sun exposure can cause brittle hair, dryness and discoloration. UV rays are known to damage the internal structure of your precious curls as well as the outer cuticle. So while you are travelling under the sun, try to keep those coils tucked away under a scarf, head warp or a sun hat. You can also apply products with UVA/UVB filters on to provide extra protection and preservation. Carry a small tube of UV protectant with your arsenal of hair staples while packing for a vacation.

2. Protective Hairstyles Are Your Friend

Travel can be taxing on your hair, so if you wish to maintain them while you are vacationing, put them into a protective style.  We are huge fans of cornrows, plaits, flat twists, Bantu knots and box braids: not only do they keep your natural hair protected and tucked away; they also require almost zero maintenance and care (which means, more time to explore your destination!) However, wearing a protective style does not free you from taking care of your natural hair. It is extremely important to keep your natural afro moisturised with TCB Naturals Leave-In Treatment, Deep Penetrating Treatment, even when it is in a protective style. Proper moisture and nourishment will help your style last for a longer period.

3. Prep Before A Swim

What would a vacation be without a dip into the pool, lake or the ocean? Do not skip this memorable chance of adventure just because you are worried about your ‘fro. It is true that in most cases, salt water and chlorine can cause dryness and damage to your locs. However, you can reduce the likelihood of damage if you properly prep your hair for the water. Before wearing a swim cap and taking a dip, saturate your strands with a good quality conditioner, once you are done, wash and detangle your tresses as usual. This process will help minimize water absorption effectively. Another option is to apply TCB Naturals Coconut Oil on your strands and tie them in a tight bun. These easy methods will keep the harmful effects of salt and chlorine away from your tresses so you can enjoy your time in the pool!

4. Say No To Heavy Bottles

Carrying a lot of luggage can always be stressful, moreover carrying heavy bottles and creams for your hair will only add to your problems. That does not mean you do not carry your favourite hair products with you. You can easily transfer them into small travel size bottles and containers and take them with you. These small bottles will serve the purpose and will not add to your luggage. We recommend carrying small bottles of shampoo, TCB Naturals Leave-In Treatment, Deep Penetrating Treatment and a spray bottle of water, that’s it! This is all you require for a small getaway/trip.  We would also suggest a travel size bottle of co-wash in case you will be swimming in the ocean and laying on the sand.

5. Use Flexi-Rods

It is time to ditch your curling iron and use flexible rollers to turn your natural afro into stylish curls. Flexi-rods are easily bendable so they will not take up a lot of luggage space; moreover, they are better for your hair since they do not require heat styling, which can be very damaging for your hair. Using them is also super easy: just dampen your afro, add a small amount of curl cream, and then wear the flexi-rods overnight (sleeping in these curlers is almost painless since they are soft). Unravel them in the morning and voila, your gorgeous curls are ready to roll!

6. Do Not Pack The Blow-Dryer

Carrying a blow dryer everywhere with you is indeed a hassle! Ditch the blow dryer while you are on a vacation and opt for a wash and go. It is uncomplicated, low maintenance and carefree, which is perfect while you are travelling. This hairstyle is as easy as it sounds; simply wash, moisturise and go!

At the end of the day, just keep it simple! Remember, a vacation should give you time to relax, explore and have fun, not worry about your hair! Keep these simple tips in mind and enjoy. Happy Travels!
